IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION OF RECOUNT TEXT THROUGH TEAM GAME TOURNAMENT (TGT) (A Collaborative Action Research of the Eighth Graders of SMP N 4 Ulujami Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2013/2014).

The objectives of the research were to describe the implementation of TGT in teaching reading comprehension of recount text at the eighth graders of SMP N 4 Ulujami Pemalang and to show the improvement of students’ reading comprehension of recount text that was taught through TGT at the eighth graders of SMP N 4 Ulujami Pemalang in the academic year of 2013/2014.
The research used a collaborative action research (CAR) as the research design. The instruments of the research were test and check list. In collecting the data, the writer used pre-test, post-test and observation sheet. For analyzing the data, the writer calculated the mean score of the students in each cycle.
The subject of this research was VIII C of SMP N 4 Ulujami Pemalang which consist of 33 students.
The result showed that TGT can improve the students’ reading comprehension of recount text at the eighth graders of SMP N 4 Ulujami Pemalang. It can be seen from two sides; (1) The implementation of TGT to teach reading comprehension of recount text was good.The students’ activeness in pre-observation (18%) to cycle I (36%) increased as much as 18% and from pre-observation (18%) to cycle II (75%) increased as much as 57%. The students were more enthusiastic and the teaching learning process runs well. (2) The students’ mean score improved from pre-test (49.39) to cycle I (59.05), and from pre-test to cycle II (76.97). It can be concluded that TGT can improve the students’ reading comprehension of recount text.
The writer recommended that English teacher; (1) use TGT as teaching strategy to teach the students in order to make them well explained, (2) use TGT to practice in grouping students for the game tournament, (3) use TGT to encourage students’ cooperation in classroom activity.
