This study was conducted under the considerations that the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Pekalongan have some problems in writing procedure text. Procedure text has several composisitions such as goal, material and steps. The aims of this study were to find out the the problems faced by the seventh graders of state Junior High School 13 Pekalongan and to d escribe the sud ents’ abil i t y in writ ing procedure text.
To achieve the objectives of the study, the writer conducted a descriptive qualitative research. The population of the study was the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Pekalongan. The total number of students in this study was 31 students. The data were collected through written test and observation sheet.
The result of the research showed that the mean score was 73,45 so the students’ ability in writing procedure text was fair. The result of observation showed that there were some problems faced by the students in writing procedure text such as the ability to organizing sentences, understanding in content, ability in using grammar, mechanics and vocabulary.
Referring to the experience in conducting this research, the writer offers suggestion to the teacher to give more pattern of sentence, rule of grammar, and generic structure to write procedure text.
